The Pittsburg State volleyball team came down with 43 kills — including 14 from senior Pamela Cartagena — as they defeated Midwestern State 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) Saturday at the Missouri Southern Invitational.
Freshman Molly Bergkamp collected 11 kills for the Gorillas, who ended the match with an attack percentage of .212.
The 17th-ranked Gorillas closed out the first game on a 5-1 run, led by a trio of kills from Cartagena.
In the second game, Pitt State recovered after falling behind, 6-2 early.
Three attack errors by Midwestern State, coupled with three kills from Bergkamp, helped the Gorillas pull away.
The teams went back and forth in the third game before PSU took a 20-16 lead on a Cartagena kill.
But, Midwestern climbed back to within one at 23-22 before Bergkamp and setter Emily Vosseler had a pair of kills to give the Gorillas the win.
Three Gorillas finished with double figure kills in the win over Missouri S&T.
Cartagena led the way with 23, followed by Bergkamp and sophomore Corrinne Stringer with 12 a piece.
Cartagena also had 15 digs, while junior Cassie Wilson led the team with 16. Cartagena and freshman Brooke Fay each put up 4 blocks on the day.
The Gorillas return to action next weekend (Sept. 4-5) as they travel to Abilene, Texas for the Abilene Christian Tournament.
The team will face Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian on Friday and Angelo State and Cameron on Saturday.
