Pittsburg JV girls tennis squads finished Nos. 1-2 at a Fort Scott JV tournament Monday, with Pittsburg Purple in first and Pittsburg White second.



In No. 1 singles, Olivia Laidler took first, followed by Carly Johnson in second and Jazmine Thomas in third. Laidler won matches against Natalie Carr of Fort Scott (6-0), Johnson (6-4) and Thomas (6-4).

Pittsburg Purple No. 2 singles player Bracquel Beachner won first and Pittsburg White No. 2 Emily Curlee took second.
Beachner won all three matches she played — over Curlee (6-1), Danielle McDowell of Fort Scott (6-2) and Holly Duff of Fort Scott (6-0).

No. 1 doubles Emily Hicks and MaKayla Pichler won first with a 2-1 mark, their only loss coming against Pittsburg White’s Chelsea McQuarie and Brie Moore, 6-4. Pittsburg Purple’s Lauren Sullivan and Sam Cicero, Pittsburg White’s Kayla Nance and Mariah Forrest and SEK Combo’s Allysa Luce and Chandi Wallace finished 1-2-3, respectively, in No. 2 doubles.

Pittsburg Purple finished with 11 points and Pittsburg White seven.

High school volleyball
Northeast High School volleyball went 1-4 at the season-opening Three Rivers League tournament Saturday in Pleasanton.

Ashlyn Sandberg had 17 aces, Kenzi Tims over 80 assists and Jessica Choate 13 kills over five matches.

Northeast (1-4) plays in a triangular against TRL rival Chetopa and host Galena Thursday.

Junior high volleyball
St. Mary’s Junior High won a season-opening volleyball tournament Saturday in Frontenac with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Panthers beat Baxter Springs (25-14, 25-23), Girard (25-17, 25-13) and Columbus (25-10, 25-7) in pool play, then Galena (24-26, 25-5, 15-10) in the semifinals and Baxter Springs (20-25, 25-18, 15-13) in the championship.

Local running
CLASS LTD and the Foundation for Class, Inc. will host the Life’s Journey 5K Run at Big Hill Lake, Mound Valley, on Sept. 17.

In addition to the 5K race, CLASS LTD and the Foundation for Class, Inc. will hold a one-mile fun walk.

Divisions will be male and female, 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and up.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., followed by the race at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration (due Sept. 9) entry fee is $20 — this entry fee includes a T-shirt and goodie bag while supply lasts. After Sept. 9, the entry fee increases to $25. Refreshments will be provided during the event.

Proceeds benefit individuals with developmental disabilities who receive services from CLASS LTD.
