  • The former Chrysler dealership building in Frontenac, sitting vacant since last spring, will soon have a new tenant.
Jay Hatfield Kawasaki — seller of motorcycles, ATVs and other utility vehicles,  — has purchased the building and is in the process of moving the business from Columbus, where it has been located for the past four years.
Owner Jay Hatfield said Friday that the move to Frontenac was made for various reasons, chief among them the centralized location.
“We are going to do the very best we can to service all of our customers,” Hatfield said. “That location really offers us a good, central location to run that business.”
Hatfield said the Frontenac location also puts the business in a “bigger market” that could provide easier access for its customers. He said Crawford County residents make up the largest portion of his customers.
“That business is a destination, but there are a lot of accessories and things that make it harder for people to come to Columbus,” he said.
Frontenac City Administrator Dan Brunetti welcomed the news, citing the certain increase in sales tax dollars from the new business.
“I’ve certainly noticed the void since Chrysler sold,” Brunetti said. “In terms of tax dollars, I’ve noticed the shortfall since last fall, so any sales tax we can gain can help.”
The Chrysler building closed in April 2009 after Molle MC Automotive failed in its attempt to combine the Chrysler dealership with its General Motors store. Molle General Manager Don Gould said at the time that Chrysler sales were dwindling, and combining the dealerships would have “cut our expenses considerably.”
Hatfield said the Columbus facility that has  housed the Kawasaki dealership will be used following the move as headquarters for the Hatfield Mobility business in Columbus.
