  • Mary Kathryn Pomatto, 88 of Roseland, Kansas passed from this life on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO following a short illness.
    Mary was born on December 12, 1924 in Roseland, Kansas to the union of Mike and Rose (Zaccarello) Carpino. She was united in marriage to Wilbur Pomatto on June 6, 1945 in Scammon, KS. He preceded her in death on December 13, 1997.
    After graduating from Kansas Teachers College in Pittsburg, Ks, she went to work for Montgomery Wards as a retailer. She then went to work for Agriculture Census in Parsons, Ks for about three years, before transferring to Civil Service Census Bureau in Pittsburg, KS where she retired with over 30 years of service.
    Mary was proud to be a councilwoman in Roseland. She was also proud of the fact that she donated land to FEMA to build the new tornado shelter in Roseland. Mary was a caregiver for many members of her family. She enjoyed babysitting all the nieces and nephews. She made the best Italian food and could cook spaghetti and French fries at the drop of a hat. She was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS.
    Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilbur; one sister Dorothy Carpino; five brothers, Sandy Carpino, Jimmy Carpino, Frank Carpino, Tony Carpino, and Fred Carpino. Mary is survived by one daughter, Lynn North and husband Walter of Joplin, MO; one granddaughter Ashley North of Joplin, MO; two brothers Mike Carpino and wife Jamie of Lee’s Summit, MO, and John Carpino of Scammon, KS; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved and will miss her dearly.
    Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Scammon, KS. Father Chrysostom Ah Maung will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery. Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2013 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS, with visitation to follow. Memorial donations may be made to St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, (Building Fund) care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
