Naturally, in a one-run game, one bad inning cost CCBA in a 5-4 loss to Chatters during a Don Gutteridge League contest Thursday night at Bill Russell Field.
With not a single ball hit out of the infield against CCBA starting pitcher Chase VanBecelaere, Chatters plated three runs on a single hit and three errors in the first inning. Sawyer Esch reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch and Jake Webb drew a walk; Esch and Webb scored on a fielding error.
Former major leaguer Don Baylor had a distinguished playing and managing career but he will always be remembered for his ability to be hit by a pitch.
In fact, author Morris Eckhouse penned the following entry on Baseball Almanac: “A durable power hitter, Don Baylor will probably be most noted as the major league record holder for being hit by a pitch. Unafraid to crowd the plate, he was hit a major league-high 28 times in 1987, setting the career record (244) when plunked by Rick Rhoden on June 28.”
Baylor ranks fourth all-time in HBP with 267 and retired with 338 home runs, 285 stolen bases and 2,135 hits over a 19-year career.
Anyway, on Thursday night, multiple CCBA batters were hit by a pitch against Chatters starter Zach Hizey. In fact, Hizey plunked four batters and forced the umpires to move toward Section 42.10 of the J.L. Hutchinson League rulebook:
“A pitcher in Ted Carnino (9-10) and Frank German (11-12) will receive a verbal warning upon hitting their second batter in a game. Hitting a third batter will result in the substitution of a new pitcher. In the Don Gutteridge (13-15), a new pitcher shall be substituted after the third hit batsman in any single inning or on the fourth hit batsman during a single game.”
With his team down 4-0 in the third, CCBA head coach Doug VanBecelaere advised a batter, “It’s only going to sting for a couple seconds. Let it hit you!”
CCBA managed one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it competitive.
Logan VanBecelaere collected a RBI single in the fourth, Alex Brown plated Landon Conrad with a RBI double in the fifth and Brown came around to score taking an extra base on a Chase VanBecelaere infield single, and Connor Smith scored in the sixth on a costly error.
Chatters scored the critical insurance run in the top half of the sixth when Esch doubled, moved over to third on a wild pitch and came home when Webb went fundamental and grounded out to the first baseman.
