  • The Pittsburg High School girls track squad broke school records Friday night on the big stage of the Class 4A Regionals at Girard.
The 4x100 relay team of Nicole Striplin, Skyler Muff, Chelsea Baker and Lauren Ouderkirk set a new PHS standard with a time of 50.16 seconds. After Striplin found out their record time, she ran up and gave Muff a big hug around midfield at Frank Jameson Field.
The 4x400 relay team of Muff, Sarah Jewett, McKenzie Spresser and Ouderkirk demolished their own school record by over 6 seconds — from an old record of 4:07.90 to a new record of 4:01.40.
Pittsburg head coach Gary Ausemus said that he believes Jewett set a school record in the 800 with her time of 2:24.06, eclipsing a personal best this season by over 4 seconds.
“I’m proud of all the girls up and down the lineup,” Ausemus said. “They just had a spectacular performance tonight. A lot of girls stepped up . . . it seems like they’re starting to peak at the right time. We hope we can really step it up one more week at the state meet next weekend. It looks like they’re starting to roll right now. They’re stepping up to the competition.”
Despite school records and personal bests Friday night, Pittsburg finished in second place with 70 points, 99 behind regional champion Paola.
“We knew Paola was really going to push us today,” Ausemus said. “We were hoping we could stay with them and we showed that in some relays that we can compete with some of the best in the state.”
State qualifiers for the Pittsburg girls include Striplin in the 200-meter dash (26.58), Jewett in the 800, Ouderkirk in the 300 hurdles (45.20), the 4x100, the 4x400, the 4x800 of Ouderkirk, Jewett, Baker and Spresser (10:14.34), Baker in the triple jump (35 feet, 7.75 inches), Spresser in the triple jump (34-11) and Striplin in the triple jump (34-10).
Baker won a regional title in the triple jump, Jewett in the 800 and Ouderkirk in the 300 hurdles.
At her last home track meet, Girard senior Randi Pierce won two regional titles — in the high jump (5-2) and the pole vault (10-0). Hayden Bauer qualified for Wichita by posting a fourth-place time of 1:00.85 in the 400.
On the boys side, Pittsburg senior Marcus Striplin landed a state qualifier in three field events and claimed two regional titles.
He won the high jump with a mark of 6-2 and won the long jump in 21-8.75. Striplin finished second in the triple jump in 42-3. His triple jump set a new personal best this season.
Gershom Avalos won a regional title in the shot with a mark of 47-9 and his teammate Chris Huyett nearly missed joining him in Wichita by placing fifth, as only the top four regional spots qualify for state.
Page 2 of 2 - Pittsburg qualified its 4x400 relay team of Garrett Brummitt, Brendan Maxwell, Dakota Brizzee and Striplin.
“The boys did about as well as what we could,” Ausemus said. “We got in several. The boys 4x4 looked really good. Marcus Striplin had a good day in the jumping events and Gershom Avalos in the shot put.
“We’re proud of the boys team. We’re just a little thin this year on the boys team but we’re proud of them. We had a lot of personal bests today. They just weren’t good enough to get in.”
Girard senior Heath Lord qualified for state with a fourth-place mark of 13-6 in the pole vault, Jordan Bradshaw finished third in the triple jump at 41-6 and Ben Coomes finished third in the shot put with a toss of 47-1.25.
