  • Each year Saint Paul hosts the early season tournament for basketball, both boys and girls teams compete in this. The other teams that participated in the tournament were Southeast, Columbus and Derby Homeschool.
The first game the girls played was against Columbus and unfortunately they lost 47-41, they didn’t play the first half to the best of their ability but came fighting back in the second half. The next game was against Southeast and they came out showing the team they could be, playing a great game, and winning 45-30. The last game the girls played was against Derby Homeschool and they had a great win 55-27.  It did come down to a three-way tie between St. Paul, Southeast and Columbus, which ended up being decided by defensive points allowed and Columbus had the least amount and, therefore, won overall.
The St. Paul boys had a different outcome then the girls, winning the overall tournament for the boys. They had their first game against Columbus and it was a close game 48-44, the next day they played Southeast and had a great win with a score of 50-38. The last game was against Derby Homeschool and this was a very close game but they came out with a 48-46 win.
The last time that a St. Paul team won the tournament was back in 2010 and it was the girls team. This was the first year that St. Paul boys have won the tournament, so this made the whole team pretty excited about the win. Senior Paul Schibi said, “We aren’t very far into the season, but we were excited to win the tournament.”
Overall, it was a great effort by both the boys and girls teams and we hope the rest of the season goes just as well.
