  • Pittsburg head wrestling coach Scott Rieck said after last Thursday night’s home duals with Independence and Columbus that senior Gershom Avalos (220 pounds) was wrestling at a high level.
Avalos took first place in the Paola Invitational on Saturday, continuing his solid wrestling headed into crunch time.
The Pittsburg senior pinned Isaah Davis of Sumner Academy in 1:20, pinned Brett Cockerham of Olathe North in 1:25 and pinned Gunar Brewar of Great Bend in 1:31 for the championship. In his only non-pin win Saturday, Avalos won a 4-1 decision over Matt Kissinger of Derby.
On the season, Avalos owns a 26-5 record.
Fellow senior Jeremiah Jones (113) could not give Pittsburg two first place finishes, settling for second after Cody McDonald of Derby pinned Jones 2:00 into their championship match.
Jones won his first three matches, all by pins — Sid Miller of Lawrence Free State in 3:14, Ryan Brocker of Paola in 2:46 and Andrew Adrian of Atchison in 2:00. With his three wins Saturday, Jones reached 25 wins this season.
Jason Wools (160) took fourth with a 3-2 mark. He won his first round match with a 14-6 major decision over Sam Skwarlo of Lawrence Free State and lost in the quarters to Tyler Harris of Atchison by pin. Wools regrouped in the consolation bracket with victories over Ashton Poage of Paola and John Hughes of Fort Scott before a 42-second pinfall loss to Chandler Ayer of Debry in the third place match.
Joey Wools (120) took fifth with a 2-2 record. Wools took a first round bye, lost in the quarterfinals to Jeffrey Morrow of Derby 6-2, won a major decision over Kelvis Gonzales of Olathe North 17-4, lost by a 50-second pinfall to Mike Kenny of Olathe North and pinned Clay Burnett of Paola in 2:52 to win the fifth place match.
