St. Mary’s-Colgan’s Tyler Jeck, No. 8, is greeted by teammates after scoring the first run of the Panthers game Saturday evening against Moscow at Soden’s Grove Stadium in Emporia during the 2-1A state championship game. Colgan never looked back, going on to win the title.

Moscow ran out of pitching and St. Marys Colgan took advantage.
The St. Marys Colgan baseball team teed-off for 10 runs on 13 hits en route to a 10-1 win for their sixth consecutive Class 2A title.
With a pitching staff depleted by the first two rounds of the tournament, Moscow was forced to start a freshmen on the mound for the Class 2A championship game at Sodens Grove in Emporia while Colgan’s Jesse Watt held the undefeated Wildcats to just one run on two hits. Watt struck out 13 batters, facing just 26 batters over seven innings.
“Our pitching doesn’t match up with that,” said Moscow head coach Stu Moore. “And I’m amazed at how well they swung the bats.”
After Dexter Hittle threw 88 pitches over five innings on Friday and Jace Thompson threw 98 pitches in the semi finals, the Wildcats were forced to turn to their No. 3 starter, freshman Ty Herman.
“It’s one of those things where you can’t take that big of a chance with their arms,” Moore said. “Ty has pitched well all year. It’s just maybe too big of a stage as a freshman.”
Moscow was forced to go back to Hittle in the third inning after the Panthers had already ran up a 7-0 lead.
“It was one of those things were I didn’t want to have to go to him too early,” Moore said. “I thought we could get two our three innings out of Ty, but unfortunately we couldn’t. If his curve ball is breaking, we could get a couple more innings out of him. I was hoping he’d go four or five honestly.”
The Panthers wasted no time jumping on the Moscow pitching. They sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning and Dylan Mjelde hit a high frozen rope that bounced off the scoreboard in left field for a home run. In all, the Panthers were able to get through their line-up five times.
For Colgan head coach Mike Watt, the feeling never gets old.
“I’ve said before that if this was old hat or old news, I would’ve quit a long time ago,” he said. “We lost a good group of seniors and I think there was a lot of doubt in this team, but we improved and peaked at the right time.”
