It’s safe to say that this is familiar territory for St. Mary’s Colgan.
The Panthers brought home a third-place finish in the Class 2A tournament at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia on Saturday. Their third in the last four years.
Katie Hayes took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers defeated Salina-Sacred Heart 7-4 in the third place game after losing to eventual champion St. Marys, 10-3  in the semifinal round.
“She threw well,” said head coach Bill Verga. “She didn’t throw badly (against St. Marys) we just didn’t support her like we should have.”
The Panthers mustered just three runs off seven hits against St. Marys after presenting an aggressive 16-run offense against Johnson-Stanton County on Friday night. Verga said he was pleased to see the Panthers rebound after their loss to the Bears in the semifinal. The bats got going again for the Panthers against Sacred Heart as they put together seven runs off of 10 hits.
“You don’t want to go home with fourth but then you don’t want to be playing for third either,” he said. “(The loss) was tough on the girls but they’re a good team with a lot of talent. They did a good job. I’m proud of them.”
Hayes struck out seven Sacred Heart batters and at one point retired nine straight.
Against St. Marys, the Panthers were able to keep it close early. Thanks to a Lisa Elmer home run in the second, Colgan trailed just 2-1 going into the fifth inning. However, the floodgates opened for the Bears offense as they scored four in the fifth and seventh. The Panthers could only post two runs in the fifth to match.
The Panthers finish the season 21-5 and will lose three seniors to graduation. They will however, return two juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen.
“The seniors got third three out of their four years so I’m proud of them,” Verga said. “The juniors will be hungry again and the sophomores and freshmen got a taste of it and it will make them anxious to return next year.
