  • The Northeast Viking boys closed out an undefeated run through Three Rivers League play (9-0) Tuesday night with a 69-32 drubbing of winless Altoona-Midway on Senior Night.
“We came out offensively firing on all cylinders,” Northeast head coach Matt Hiatt said. “I didn’t feel like we did a good job defensively in the first half and we picked up our intensity and our defense in the second half.”
Northeast led 39-20 at halftime and cooled out the Jets with a 21-2 advantage in the third quarter.
Sophomore guard J.T. Richardson led all scorers with 16 points. Senior big men inside Chase Cleland and Cody McCloud added 15 and 14 respectively, fellow seniors Cole Robinson and Jon Baker added seven and six respectively, and sophomore Noah Popejoy finished with six points.
Northeast (16-4 overall) wins its first league basketball title since 2001, a season when the Vikings completed a 20-0 regular season and finished 8-0 in Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League play.
“It is a good feeling,” Hiatt said. “I feel happy for the kids. They’ve worked very hard and they deserve it. We’re hoping that this is not the highlight of our season. We’re hoping for a substate title.”
Northeast won the girls contest 51-20 with big nights by seniors Jessica Choate and Kenzi Tims. Choate almost outscored Altoona-Midway herself with a game-high 18 points and Tims added seven points.
Freshman guard Kaylee Bogina added 11 points for the Vikings (8-12, 4-5).
