A team of Mathletes from Pittsburg Community Middle School won the local MATHCOUNTS competition held Saturday at the Kansas Technology Center, Pittsburg State University. A total of 63 students from nine southeast Kansas middle and junior high schools participated in the event.

A team of Mathletes from Pittsburg Community Middle School won the local MATHCOUNTS competition held Saturday at the Kansas Technology Center, Pittsburg State University. A total of 63 students from nine southeast Kansas middle and junior high schools participated in the event.

Top individual was Drew Mills, Arma, Northeast Junior High School.

Members of the winning team from PCMS are Lewis Weller, Amanda Hoffman, Josh Lee and Trina Paul.  The team is coached by Linda Knoll.

Second place team was Northeast Junior High School, and third  was Central Junior High School, Columbus.

Other individual winners were Lewis Weller, PCMS, second place; Spencer Rogers, Louisburg, third; Kasey Dixon, Frontenac, fourth; Caleb Thompson, Cherokee, Southeast Junior High School, fifth; and Amanda Hoffman, PCMS, sixth. The top three teams and six individuals will advance to state competition, scheduled March 3 in Salina. State winners will advance to the MATHCOUNTS National Competition, to be held May 11 in Orlando, Fla.
