Trojan Tribune Staff members competed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Contest at Pittsburg State University Thursday, Feb. 23.

Trojan Tribune Staff members competed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Contest at Pittsburg State University Thursday, Feb. 23.

One hundred twenty-five students from nine schools, including Girard, Chanute, Pittsburg, Humboldt, Caney Valley, Frontenac, Iola, Neodesha and Columbus, competed in a variety of on-site and carry-in journalism contests.

    The Girard staff earned three 1st place finishes, one 2nd place finish, two 3rd place finishes, and four honorable mentions in 3A-4A competition.

Results are as follows:
Alexis Thomason, first in Editing, third in Yearbook Layout and honorable mention in Yearbook Sports Writing;
Danielle Gull, first in Cutline Writing and honorable mention in Feature Writing;
Rachel Rawlings, first in Editorial Cartoon;
Mandy Simons, second in Cutline Writing;
Ashley Barry, third in News Writing;
Jordan Davied, honorable mention in Yearbook Sports Writing;
Melanie Frisbee, honorable mention in Editing.

    These students qualified to compete in their respective categories at the KSPA State Contest to be held at the University of Kansas on Saturday, May 5.

Regarding these results, adviser Mary Jane Dent said, “I am very proud of the Trojan Tribune Staff for their achievements in this contest and for their work throughout this year in publishing the Trojan Tribune. I look forward to taking them to compete in the KSPA State Contest May 5.

“I would also like to thank Marilyn Hey for her assistance with transportation to the regional contest and Edna Waldren for her contributions to the group in so many ways throughout the school year.”
