  • Group of locals named Kansas Honor Scholars

  • A total of 75 seniors from high schools in Crawford  and Cherokee Counties will be recognized Monday for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars during a 6:30 p.m. dinner and program at the Overman Student Center, Pittsburg State University.

  • A total of 75 seniors from high schools in Crawford  and Cherokee Counties will be recognized Monday for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars during a 6:30 p.m. dinner and program at the Overman Student Center, Pittsburg State University.
    During the ceremony, each student will receive a Webster’s New College Dictionary presented by Michelle Miles, assistant director of Kansas programs for the KU Alumni Association.
    Speaker will be Rueben Perez, director of the Student Involvement  and Leadership Center at the University of Kansas.
    Honored students will be guests of the alumni association and KU Endowment. Parents and area alumni are welcome to attend at a cost of $15 per person.
    Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Nancy Scott and Michael Brewer, Pittsburg, are site coordinators. Rodney and Karen Odgers, Pittsburg, are the coordinators for Cherokee and Crawford Counties.
    Since the inception of the Kansas Honors Program in 1971, more than 117,000 scholars who rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior class have been honored.
    Honored students, listed alphabetically by high school, are as follows:
    BAXTER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL — Sean Botts, Mehkyiah Brandt, Karsten Creech, Fantasy Fletcher, Kayla McCully, Jonathan Newton, Brice Reynolds and Torbin Slavens.
    COLUMBUS UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOL — Zoe Foster, Gavin Houser, Nathaniel Jameson, Brandon Ledford, Benjamin Miller, Breana Mogle, Addison Torchia and Haley Touchton.
    FRONTENAC HIGH SCHOOL — Blake Barto, Kara Amanda Cicero, Caleb Coulter, McKayla Edwards, Lindsay Gorham, Cody Lindbloom and Jacob Teats.
    GALENA HIGH SCHOOL — Alyssa Adams, Shantel Barker, Marissa Blevins, Logan Gideon, Bria Lamica and Bailey Titus.
    GIRARD HIGH SCHOOL — Derrick Amend, Aubri Ashbacher, Bethany Baker, Hayden Bauer, Austin Egbert, Logan Hanson, Hadyn Herlocker, Chanel Jackson, Madison Smith, Katelin White and Anissa Zagonel.
    NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL — Sammy Brooks and Laila Schlee.
    PITTSBURG HIGH SCHOOL — Spencer Bernhardt, Andie Casper, Shannon Dial, Liza Erwin, Lauren Geiger, Haylee Moore, Ali Orscheln, Jordan Redd, Megan Reed, Logan Rink, Jacob Rowley, Derek Scholes, Mary Spencer, Nicholas Vacca, Brittany Wilde and Elizabeth Willis.
