  • Brand-new tanning technology has arrived in Pittsburg just in time for spring.
Malibu Tanning Salon received its VersaPro system, a UV-free sunless spray tan unit, a couple weeks ago as the business gears up for the spring break, prom, graduation and wedding seasons.
“We’re the first salon in Kansas to get one of these,” said Malibu owner Jason Renn.
He added that the unit in Pittsburg is the 51st one delivered nationwide.
Customer preference has been leaning toward sunless options, Renn said, and his business is trying to meet that demand.
“Whether it be health concerns or something else, they’re just not using (traditional units) as much,” Renn said. “We’re trying to offer something else.”
The tan provided by the VersaPro unit is cosmetic only, and Renn said customers definitely need to wear sunscreen for sun protection when outside, but he said it also is instantaneous and tends to last for 6-8 days, depending on how active the customer is.
“The moment you walk out of there, you will have a golden bronze tan,” Renn said.
Customers also can choose whether they want to tan their full body, just their face or just their legs. After that, the automated machine guides them through the tanning process, which includes pre-warmed solutions and lasts about 8 to 8.5 minutes if the customer goes through the prep spray, bronzer and post moisturizer cycles.
Renn said a major advantage of this machine is that it is designed to help prevent the orangey color often associated with spray tanning. He noted there is no door, it has an open ceiling and a vacuum helps to suck away extra mist that traditionally could become overly concentrated.
Renn said he is taking appointments for VersaPro use through the end of May, and he advised at least calling ahead to check the schedule during the busy season.
