  • It wasn’t hard for Jennifer Ziegler, Girard, to choose her career in education.
“I wanted to be a teacher my whole life,” she said. “I grew up playing school, and made my brother play school with me.”
In fact, she put a little piece of paper with her name on it outside her bedroom.
“It was my classroom,” Ziegler explained.
Teachers have played a role in her life.
“My favorite teacher was Sue McClintick, my second grade teacher, and I had a really good English teacher, Jan Geier, at Girard Middle School,” she said.
A Girard High School graduate, she graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2003 and got a job as a para educator at R.V. Haderlein Elementary school. In the fall of 2004 she started as a fifth grade teacher.
“It was the same day that my son, Ryan, started kindergarten,” Ziegler said. “Last year I started teaching second grade.”
Julie Smith, whose nephew is in Ziegler’s class, said that she is really good about developing strong bonds with her students, who always call her “Miss Z.”
“At enrollment or meet-the-teacher night, her kids from last year always want to come and say hi,” Smith said.
Ziegler has volunteered for a new duty, and after spring break will teach the new 21st Century Grant after-school program at Haderlein.
“The program will meet from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,” she said. “There will be time for homework, time for tutoring for those who need it, and enrichment.”
When she isn’t doing the teaching she loves so much, Ziegler loves spending time with family, which includes her niece and nephew.
“My nephew, who is 3, and I made valentines for the whole family Saturday, and then he went to church with me Sunday morning,” she said. “My whole family gets together for Sunday dinner.”
