  • Eighteen Girard Kayette members attended the KAY Unit Conference at Oswego Wednesday, Jan. 30. Kansas Association for Youth “is a character-building, leadership-training, service program.”
To begin the conference, members were split into eight groups for student activities. During the session GHS members met with other local students participating in the program for a quick get-acquainted game.
At the same time as the student activities, area presidents met for a brief meeting.
Following these events, all KAY members met for the opening general session where KAY State Director Cheryl Gleason addressed them on the current year and what it means to be a leader.
Students then split into their eight groups again and attended a “Balance & Rotate” session where they met with other KAY members.
From there, members listened to and visited with guest speakers Kevin Olsen and Heather Blundell.
Olsen was in a diving accident at age 19 that left him paralyzed. He talked to the students about making good decisions and how that one decision impacted his life forever.
Blundell told students about the death of her son, Mark Carter III, who passed away in 2011 of Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. She warned the students of the dangers of inhalant abuse and how it has affected her life. Since her son’s death, she has started a scholarship fund in his name.
Regarding the scholarship, Blundell said, “When you become a parent, your biggest fear is something happening to your child. When something happens to your child, your biggest fear is them being forgotten.”
With regard to the guest speakers, junior Ashley Johnson said, “They really taught me to not take my life for granted and to live each day like it is my last.”
While students were in the “Balance & Rotate” session and visiting with guest speakers, all local KAY sponsors, including GHS Kayette co-sponsor Robyn O’Malley, met to exchange ideas.
After members finished the guest speaker sessions, they met by school to make wreaths for local nursing homes and cards for Jason Beach, an Oswego student involved in a car accident.
The conference ended with the closing general session led by Cheryl Gleason.
Regarding the event, Mrs. O’Malley said, “Unit Conference is a great time to get together with other clubs and redefine our goals.”
Girard Kayette president Taylor Evans agreed, saying, “The Unit Conference is really a great way to come together and get to know people from other local KAY clubs. We learned a lot of new ideas to take back to our club and overall had a great time.”
GHS members who attended include Aubri Ashbacher, Alix Beezley, Brinkley Born, Leah Bridgewater, Bre Daly, Trisha Elder, Taylor Evans, Megan Gray, Ashley Horton, Rebecca Jameson, Ashley Johnson, Brittany Kratz, Michaela Lee, Faith McClaskey, Kristen O’Toole, Sabrie Puckett, Jayden Rusher and Katelin White.
