A new downtown director will take over a new phase in the life of downtown Pittsburg as the district makes the transition from improvement projects to promotion.

Judy Westhoff retired Feb. 6, after more than seven years in the position, and Blake Benson, president of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, said downtown stakeholders will meet soon to select her successor.

“Judy did a great job of leading that position through the downtown streetscape project and the facade grant project,” Benson said.

He said those improvements pave the way for the new director to focus more on marketing what the downtown is.

“We’ve got the house ready for company to come over and we now need to find someone who is knowledgeable in event planning,” Benson said.

The deadline for applicants and resumes to be submitted is March 1, and Benson said those will be culled down to the top two or three next week.

Candidates then will meet with a representative group of downtown stakeholders, which will include interested parties from the city of Pittsburg and downtown business owners.

Benson said the community is poised to assist the new downtown director.

“The downtown activities committee has generated lots of ideas for events downtown,” Benson said. “They’ve really brought a new enthusiasm and volunteer grassroots to the community. That can be a great resource for this person because one person can’t do it all.”

The new director will need to know how to put events together in order to aid groups who are holding events or festivals, but will not necessarily be doing all the event legwork.

Benson said experience qualifications are important to the position, particularly in the areas of event planning and marketing. Additionally, the correct person must have a passion for downtown, be able to navigate a wide variety of different and sometimes differing visions and be able to help bring about stakeholder consensus.

Applicants may send their resume and references to Blake Benson at bbenson@pitttsburgareachamber.com by March 1.
