1. What are your thoughts on the county’s budget and are there specific changes that you would support?

It’s hard to comment on the county budget when you are not working there to see firsthand what departments may be overfunded or what departments may be underfunded. I feel the budget needs to be looked at and analyzed line by line each year to see where possible cuts could be made or where extra funding would be needed. Look at refinancing all bonds the county may have to lower interest rates. I would like to look into a 5-year plan on the county road and bridge department to see if there is any matching money out there for the county to use. Go after grant money. The most important thing for Crawford County is to get companies to locate here in the county, and take care of the companies we already have. The bottom line is we need jobs and jobs create revenue. We need to spend money wisely and efficiently.

2. Crawford County Commissioners are responsible for overseeing the county’s Road and Bridge crews. Would you support any change to the current structure. If so, why and if not, why not?

At present, the current Road and Bridge structure seems to be working fairly efficient. District crews work together on large projects, and the larger equipment is shared among the districts. I feel the district needs to stay separate. However, so all or a majority of the project wouldn’t be congregated into one or two districts. Each commissioner needs to have control of their own district to take care of their roads and provide for their constituents. I would like to see a maintenance plan for all county equipment to save time and money.

3. Would you support a 3 percent deference to local companies on bid process?

I am in favor of using local businesses for county operation whenever possible. These local businesses pay taxes in our communities and provide local employment. I feel all major purchases or projects need to be looked and and analyzed by all three of the county commissioners. Also, at the county level, there is a state statute that requires all contracts for expenditure of county money for the construction of a courthouse, jail, or county building. Or the construction of any bridge, highway road, dam or related structures in excess of $25,000 shall be awarded to the lowest, and best bid.
