After a few years without a taxicab service, Pittsburg will be getting its second company, starting this morning.
Pittsburg I-CAB, based off I-CAB Transportation in Independence, will open this morning for riders after 7 a.m.
Bob Baker, company founder, said the company would also do Medicaid, insurance, workman’s compensation, rail, corporate and a shuttle.
“All of those services will be available starting tomorrow (Friday) morning except for the shuttle,” Baker said.
I-CAB marks the second time this week a taxicab company announced its start in Pittsburg. Earlier this week, Sammy's Cab & Taxi Service announced its return to service after a three-year absence.
Baker said I-CAB would start with three cabs, all labeled with an I-CAB on the side, with two more cabs added in a week for a total of five.
But Baker said he might be most proud of the shuttle, which will come to town May 12 as part of the company. The 14-passenger shuttle will go around to local hotels before traveling to Joplin or Kansas City’s airports. Baker said the only hold was his company arranging the details with both airports, but that everything looked fine.
“Our system should be effective 300 miles in any direction,” Baker said. “And the shuttle system will supply something needed for the area.”
“We’ll be happy to start taking riders as soon as we open (at 7 a.m.),” Baker said. “After that, we won’t take any time off.”
The company will run 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
