Robert “Bob” D. Barnett, 80, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 11:55 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg.

Robert “Bob” D. Barnett, 80, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 11:55 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg.

He was born July 6, 1929, at Osawatomie, KS, the son of Albert C. and Susie (Tucker) Barnett. He began working at Lindburg Pharmacy as a delivery boy and soda jerk in 1942 and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1947. He continued to work at Lindburg Pharmacy until joining the United States Army in 1949.  Obtaining the rank of sergeant, he worked in the counter-intelligence corps and was stationed in Austria.  Following his military service, he studied pharmacy at the University of Kansas City, graduating in 1954.

While living in Kansas City, Mr. Barnett met Patricia R. Scifers.  Married on June 4, 1955, they lived in Kansas City and owned a drug store on Troost Avenue. To their union, two children, son Christopher and daughter Teresa, were born. In 1959, the family moved back to Bob’s hometown of Pittsburg, where he returned to work at Lindburg Pharmacy as a pharmacist. In the mid-1960’s, he purchased the drug store and later expanded by opening a second store. In the late 1980’s, he sold the company and entered into “retirement.” Until early 2009, Mr. Barnett continued to work as a relief pharmacist in the cities of Ft. Scott, Joplin, Erie, Oswego, Baxter Springs, Neosho, and Parsons.  In 2006, he was awarded a gold certificate from the State Board of Missouri for working as a pharmacist for 50 years.

Mr. Barnett was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Pittsburg where he had served as an elder and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was active in Masonic circles, Mr. Barnett held membership in the Pittsburg Lodge No. 187 AF&AM, the Pittsburg Chapter No. 58 Royal Arch Masons, Montjoie Commandery No. 29 of Knight’s Templar, and Scottish Rite--Valley of Ft. Scott, where he received honors as Knight Commander Court of Honor and the 33rd Degree and where he served as a Degree Master. He was a member of the Mirza Shrine and was Illustrious Potentate in 1980. He was a member and past director of the Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 95 and member of the Order of Quetzalcoatal.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his children, one brother and four sisters. 

Services for Mr. Barnett will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at the First Christian Church, Pittsburg, with Reverend Kevin Arensman conducting the service.  Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg. The family suggests memorials to the Shriner’s Kids and/or First Christian Church of Pittsburg and/or Angels Among Us.
