  • Chanute won the Class 4A wrestling regional hosted by Pittsburg and the hosts finished in fourth, moving their way up one spot after the first day of competition Friday.
Pittsburg senior Gershom Avalos defended his 220-pound regional title, winning an injury default over Stephen McDonald of Iola.
Levi Kester and Jeremiah Jones of Pittsburg, however, lost their regional title matches. Kester was pinned by Case Pemberton of Prairie View in the third round of their 106 title bout and Nick Ornelas of Chanute won a 4-2 decision over Jones at 113.
Pittsburg earned another three state qualifications as the consolation bracket played itself out Saturday — Joey Wools (120) and Ivan Carrell (195) each placed third and Brett Cobb (132) fourth.
After his loss Friday night in the semis to Brendon Chrisjohn of Osawatomie, Wools defeated Austin Huber of Louisburg in the consolation semis and pinned Derek Creel of Columbus during a third place match.
Carrell, who lost his very match Friday to Keenan Dodd of Parsons, won four consecutive matches Saturday to earn his first state trip: three consecutive pins over Tim Cornett of Anderson County, Tanner Edwards of Frontenac and Dodd, and won an injury default over Cody Howell of Chanute.
Cobb won his consolation semi against Dylan Stewart of Osawatomie but lost his third place match against Jordan Mead of Independence in overtime.
Frontenac senior Tanner Craig (138) earned the lone state berth for the Raiders and improved his overall season record to 35-8 with four consecutive wins Saturday earning him third place.
Craig pinned Dylan Misener of Parsons in 45 seconds, won a 11-4 decision over Ben Powers of Louisburg, won a 7-2 decision over Christian Foulk of Coffeyville and won a 4-2 decision over Dannon Brake of Prairie View in the third place match.

Metcalf lost a 7-4 decision to Gavin Houser of Columbus, a battle of state-ranked grapplers at 195.
With only nine wrestlers, Columbus earned five spots for next week: Derek Creel (fourth, 120), Taylor Watkins (first, 152), Zack Roark (third, 160), Jace McDown (second, 170) and Houser (first, 195).
