  • The Pittsburg girls went out fighting in their 56-52 Class 4A quarterfinal loss Thursday night to Fort Scott.
    Pittsburg trailed 23-8 after one quarter — Fort Scott sharpshooter Katren Rienbolt alone outscored Pittsburg in the first quarter with her nine points. Rienbolt and freshman Ashley Cook helped Fort Scott gain a 35-21 halftime lead, combining for 24 points (Rienbolt 14, Cook 10).
    The Purple Dragons cut the lead to 45-36 after three quarters and down 52-44 late in the game, Pittsburg scored six points within 25 seconds to make it a 52-50 contest with 48 seconds remaining.
    Pittsburg fouled Fort Scott point guard Maddie Allen with 39.6 ticks left and Allen made her only two points of the game count for a 54-50 lead.
    Rienbolt led the Southeast Kansas League champions with 23 points, Cook had 17 and Brianne Lawrence added six.
    Lizzy Willis led Pittsburg with 15 points, Alaura Short collected 12, and Katy Short and Bethanne Elliott both scored nine. Brianna Maxwell added seven.
    Willis, Alaura Short and Maxwell — three Pittsburg seniors — combined for 34 points in their final high school game.
    Fort Scott improved to 15-5 and Pittsburg ends its season 13-7.
    In the first game of the quadruple header Thursday, No. 7 seed Columbus improved to 13-8 with a 57-46 win over No. 2 Prairie View. Madi Evans led the Titans with 16 points.
    Top seed Frontenac defeated Anderson County 67-43. Haley Wilson parlayed six 3-point shots into 19 points and Bailey Flora added 14.
    Frontenac will meet Girard in the semifinals — Girard defeated Baxter Springs 42-26 in the 4-5 game. Hadyn Herlocker scored 19 and the Trojans pulled away from the Lions with a 16-3 advantage in the third quarter.
    After two previous games decided at the buzzer, Girard won the season series 2-1 with a 16-point win Thursday night for the defending substate champs.
    Frontenac and Girard recently played for a share of the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League title.
    Class 2A — Northeast
    The Vikings hosted seven substate quarterfinal games Thursday night, utilizing two courts.
    On the boys side, West Elk defeated Madison 38-14, Pleasanton knocked off host Northeast 54-45, Oswego defeated Yates Center 51-37 and Sedan upended Uniontown 56-50.
    Semifinal games tonight are West Elk-Pleasanton and Oswego-Sedan. Both games are played at 6:30 p.m. — West Elk-Pleasanton in the north gym and Oswego-Sedan on the south side.
    On the girls side, top seed Pleasanton defeated West Elk 38-30, Oswego beat Uniontown 59-44, Sedan defeated Northeast 71-31 and Yates Center beat Madison 34-32. In the semifinals tonight, Pleasanton-Oswego and Sedan-Yates Center play at 5, Pleasanton-Oswego in the north gym and Sedan-Yates Center in the south gym.
