  • Fred R. Schiefelbein, 94 of Pittsburg, KS died at 8:35 pm, Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Via Christi Medical Center.

  • Fred R. Schiefelbein, 94 of Pittsburg, KS died at 8:35 pm, Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Via Christi Medical Center.
    He was born Aug. 23, 1918 in Pittsburg the son of Fred A. and Gretchen M. (Keller) Schiefelbein.
    On July 23, 1945 he was united in marriage to Minnie M. Banke, in Chicopee, KS; she preceded him in death on November 15, 1993.
    Shortly before and after graduating from KSTC (now PSU) he was a sports editor and writer for the Pittsburg Headlight and Sun.  He worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad, Division Engineer’s Office in Pittsburg as the Office Manager and Payroll Clerk for 19 years; he then worked for the Hull and Dillon Packing Co, as an accountant and later General Manager for 18 years.  
    He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, past United Way board member, Little League Board of Directors and District Softball Commissioner for fast pitch softball.
    He was prominent in the formation of the Pittsburg Little League baseball organization where he also served as president.  He was an avid fisherman, woodworker and golfer, being a regular figure at the Four Oaks Golf Course, scoring 14 holes-in-one over the years.
    Survivors include three sons: Mark Schiefelbein (Mary Sue) of Pittsburg, Paul Schiefelbein (Claudia) of Gilbert, AZ, Kurt Schiefelbein (Jan) of rural Pittsburg; a daughter Kay Payne (Mike) of Overland Park, KS; a sister Rosemary Rogers of San Antonio, TX and a devoted sister-in-law Irene Wilbert of Pittsburg, 10 grandchildren: Matthew Payne, Gary Schiefelbein, Karen Simone, Carrie Henderson, Jill Schiefelbein, Niki Jordan, Emily Burgard, Eric Schiefelbein, Patrick Schiefelbein, Scot Schiefelbein and 16 great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his wife and a grandson Stephen Schiefelbein.
    Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am, Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Robert McElwee as Celebrant.  Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.  Rosary was recited at 7:00 pm on Friday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.  Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.  The family suggests in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy be in the form of Memorials to Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.  Services are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S.
