  • Brightly colored traditional attire from around the world was modeled by 10 Pittsburg State University women in honor of International Women’s Day on Friday.
A small crowd of students gathered to cheer for the women as they shared a piece of their culture on the runway in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom.
Migee Kong, Sophie Park, Kelly Bae and June Kim all wore traditional hanbok outfits in various shades of pink to celebrate traditional Korean attire.
“We have a lot of color,” said Bae. “Pink and red are general colors.”
She said the hanbok often is worn for celebratory events, including weddings and the Korean Thanksgiving holiday, which generally falls in September or October.
Bae said small children still tend to wear traditional attire, but that adults generally only do so for formal events.
Hongyin “Diana” Lu wore a qipao, which she said was a dress in the style of attire from the Maio nation.
She said the nation we know as China actually is made up of numerous traditional nations and that the Maio nation is one of the most beautiful and temperate places in China.
Lu said the dress she wore was inspired by the peacocks in that region.
    Others participating were:
Mayuri Murali, of India, who wore a purple and orange chudidar.
Yemisi Olubi, of Nigeria, who modeled two outfits including an adire and a yoruba caftan in a leaf pattern with gold accents.
Rupali Verma of India, who modeled a blue and white kurtan pujari.
Quynh Nguyen and Anh Nguyen of Vietnam, who modeled two different color pairings of the traditional ao dai.
The celebration of international women continued  with an additional event later in the evening that included musicians, poets and spoken word artists and other presentations.
