  • Purple won the Purple and White Scrimmage on Friday, the annual Pittsburg High School tennis event, defeating White 6-3.
    “Rain stopped play but able to finish most of it,” Pittsburg head coach John Seal said. “We are very young and very deep and can go 8-10 players deep. Strong ninth-tenth grade class ensures great future for us.”
    This scrimmage promises the start of spring sports every year and sure enough, Pittsburg opens its tennis season Tuesday at Independence.
    In single matches Friday, junior Hank Cloninger (White) defeated freshman Logan Benham 8-5, sophomore Adrian McAfee (White) defeated junior Josh Dial 8-6, junior Joban Mendpara (Purple) defeated freshman Michael Quigley 7-5, sophomore Zach Dee (Purple) defeated senior Aaron VanCleave 6-0 and senior Tri Palmer (Purple) defeated Jarod Wilde 6-1.
    In double matches, sophomores Nick Powers-Micah Hashman (White) defeated seniors Jake Creech-Kaleb Konek 8-2, Dee-Ryan Newcombe (Purple) defeated VanCleave-Bryce Forrest 6-1, Dial-Benham defeated Powers-Hashman 8-2 and Mendpara-Newcombe (Purple) defeated Forrest-Quigley 6-2.
    One doubles match was not finished due to rain: Creech-Konek against McAfee-Cloninger.
