  • Frontenac senior John Murray announced his intentions Thursday afternoon to play football at Pittsburg State as a walk-on.
"We were talking with Coach Beck (Pittsburg State head coach Tim Beck) around November," Murray said. "He invited me to walk on. I asked him if I could have time to decide and he said that was fine."
"He talked with them a few times and they asked him to walk on," Frontenac head coach Mark Smith said. "He'll be a great addition to the Pitt State program, his great work ethic will just make the team better. He's a great student. He'll make Pitt State proud."
Murray, a defensive linemen during his high school career, has discussed playing outside linebacker, blocking fullback or strong safety in college.
"I report to practice in August and that will be my tryout," Murray said.
"That's a downside to it. I don't look at it as a size matter. I look at it as I have the heart, I have the will to go through these four years and it's a complete job. I know I have the confidence and the strength to pull through."
Murray sees a great opportunity at Pitt State.
"I was brought up a Pitt State fan," Murray said. "It's a historic program and there's just so many other great athletes, people I look up to, that have walked in my shoes before and I'm just so grateful I get to have this opportunity. I thank Coach Beck, Coach Smith and Coach Carey (former Frontenac head coach Kevin Carey), and all my other previous coaches."
Murray has been part of a large athletic class at Frontenac.
"I gained a lot of experience having our senior class being able to start since we were sophomores and a lot of us had to start when we were freshmen," Murray said. "It was a great experience, great coaching, great family, great atmosphere."
Frontenac made three straight state football playoffs.
