Girard softball coach Jerry O’Rand knew that if his team wanted to have a shot at a CNC League championship, that road would run through Riverton.
On Friday night, that road was not an easy one.
The Trojans had to fight from being down 3-0 to defeat the Rams 4-3 in eight innings on an RBI double from Lisa Curran then they belted out 15 runs on 12 hits to paste the Rams 15-6 in the second game behind two fence-clearing home runs from Ariel Vinze to earn the sweep and stay unbeaten on the season.
“We came out flat in game one and had to battle back,” O’Rand said. “That first game was one of the toughest game I have had to coach.
“Riverton was ready and they hit the ball very well,” O’Rand said. “It was a gut-check time for our girls and they came out and made the plays to win the game.”
In the top of the eighth, Taylor Stewart led off the inning with a single then Nikki Cuthbertson grounded out to advance Stewart to second.
Then Curran smacked her RBI double to score the go-ahead run.
The Trojans were able to hold off the Rams in the bottom half of the inning for the win.
In the second game, Girard got two doubles from Curran and triples from Starr McLeod and Alysha Poteas along with the homers from Vinze to pace past the Rams.
“It was just a matter of time before we were able to make the adjustments to get the bat on the ball,” O’Rand said.
