Philip S. “Stan” George, 57, died April 27, 2013. He was born Feb. 21, 1956, in Girard, KS, the son of Philip Andrew and Rosemary Lillian (Crager) George.
Philip S. “Stan” George, 57, died April 27, 2013. He was born Feb. 21, 1956, in Girard, KS, the son of Philip Andrew and Rosemary Lillian (Crager) George. He graduated from St. Mary’s/Colgan H.S. in Pittsburg, KS and then Friends University. Stan was a certified golf course superintendent for the past 30 years at Prairie Dunes. He hosted several major golf tournaments including the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, the U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Senior Open in 2002. He mentored numerous prominent golf course superintendents over his 37 years in the golf industry. Stan has been nominated for the Kansas Golf Association Hall Of Fame, with final selection being held in 2014. Stan was the reigning champion of the George Brother’s Annual Golf Tournament. He was by far the most prolific winner of this 33 year family gathering.
Stan was a member of Grace Bible Church. He volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, Toys for Tots, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Young Marines. He had been a board member with the Kansas Golf Course Association and the Kansas Turf Foundation.
On Feb. 24, 2001, he married Debbie J. Earl in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include; two sons, David Andrew Robertson and wife Birdie of Maize, KS, Chance Justice George of Hutchinson; six siblings, Bill George and wife Pola of Rocky Mount, N.C., Ben George and wife Karen of Prosper, TX, Bob George and wife Mary Beth of Cato, KS, MaryAnn Dewey and husband John of Collierville, TN, Steve George and wife Brenda of Hill City, KS, Connie George and husband Jesse of Wichita; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Jeannie George-Darby.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Grace Bible Church, 1221 E 33rd, with Dr. Rick Goertzen presiding. Friends may sign the book 9-9 Monday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Stan George Children’s Education Fund in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
