Dear Editor
I thought the new construction plan at the intersection of Rouse and Fourth streets was to help with traffic flow and cut down on the number of accidents. Recently, there have been two crashes that have closed down the intersection for a period of time. I don’t know what causes each crash, but the new set-up is a wreck waiting to happen. Protected turn signals are needed. It is difficult to make a left turn at the intersection when high school students are trying to get to school in the morning and evening. I know the plans to add the protected turn signals sometime in the future, but I think it should become a higher priority.
The short two lane area on Fourth going east and west are drag-racing lanes.  I have to travel on Fourth to get to and from the downtown area. Several times I have had motorists pull up beside me on the left and then race me to the other side of the intersection so they can get ahead of me! Most recently, a motorist passed three cars to get in front of the first car! Someday this practice will result in a terrible accident. This could be remedied by making the left lane a turn lane only. I know that large trucks need the room to turn the corner. This will still allow trucks to make a safe turn but take care of the motorist passing cars on the left side.
