  • The Frontenac baseball team improved to 12-0 on the season with a Friday sweep of the Baxter Springs Lions, 9-7 and 10-1.
In the opener, Frontenac scored all of its nine runs in two outbursts, five in the third and four in the fifth on Baxter pitchers Zach Miller and Cody Rowe.
Brett Macary cruised through the majority of the first four innings but the Lions caught up with him for two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Macary fell an out short of making it out of the sixth. Macary threw 84 pitches, relieved by Caleb Spanger for the final 1 1/3.
Baxter Springs managed no runs and no hits — no baserunners, period — against Spangler, who earned the save.
Frontenac dominated on the bases, stealing seven, led by Macary with three. Avery Coronado helped out with two sacrifice bunts.
Blake Barto went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Bryan Wade hit 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Macary supported himself with a 3-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
Christian Sharp added 2-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. The Raiders belted out 14 hits.
In the second game, as is customary for the Raiders, senior flamethrower Matt Standlee played the role of bat silencer.
During his complete game victory, Standlee gave up a single run — unearned — on four hits and he struck out eight while walking none.
With the work of Spangler and Standlee, Frontenac pitchers did not walk a batter the final 12 1/3 innings Friday.
Offensively, Standlee supported himself with three RBI, Barto added two and Wade led the Raiders with two hits. Frontenac took advantage of six uncharacteristic Baxter errors and five walks by three different pitchers.
Dylan Plouvier and Jacob Teats came off the bench for Bryce Burdette and Wade. Plouvier scored a run and Tyler Randall scored a pair of runs.
Frontenac plays at Galena on Monday.
The Frontenac softball doubleheader with Baxter Springs was postponed and will be played on Wednesday, of course weather permitting. The Raiders will play games next week against Galena, Baxter and Prairie View.
The Girard baseball team was supposed to play its first game in Girard this season at Wutke Park but rain moved an already postponed once doubleheader to Riverton on Friday night.
In the opener, Girard only trailed Riverton 5-3 after two but the Rams went on to win 14-4 in run-rule fashion. Riverton earned the sweep with a 6-5 win in the nightcap, dropping Girard to 0-9.
Girard and Riverton already split their softball doubleheader in Girard.
The Southeast baseball road varsity/JV doubleheader with Lamar (Mo.) scheduled for Friday night was postponed for the second time. Southeast remains 3-4 on the season and plays Riverton at home on Monday.
