The Northeast Vikings fell behind early during both ends of a Three Rivers League doubleheader Monday night but came out with a sweep of the Marmaton Valley Wildcats, 3-2 in eight innings and 12-6.
In the opener, Marmaton Valley scored the lone run of the first three innings. Sage Hall led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a 5-3 groundout.
Starting pitchers Josh Rose of Northeast and Jimmy Frye of Marmaton Valley predominantly matched goose eggs for the evening with each team managing only single-run innings.
Marmaton Valley took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, helped out by a pair of Northeast errors after
Ryan Smith reached on a single with one down. Northeast second baseman Seth Chandler, who committed one of the errors, helped avert more damage by turning a 4-3 double play — he tagged out Austin Deer and threw out Gage Adams.
The Viking offense, which only had isolated singles from Joey McDowell and Chandler in the first three innings, finally pushed across its first run in the fourth. Noah Popejoy reached on an infield single, later to score with the assistance of two Marmaton Valley errors.
Northeast tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. Rose belted a double into the gap. Dennis Hensley moved pinch runner Keegan Willard over to third on a groundout, then Chandler delivered another solid hit with a RBI double.
The game remained 2-all until the home portion of the eighth.
Northeast won with not a ball hit into the outfield.
J.T. Richardson reached on an error, advanced into scoring position on a perfectly-executed sacrifice up the first base line by Popejoy, stole third and came home on a wild pitch during Killian Willard’s at-bat.
In the nightcap, Marmaton Valley came out of the starting gates looking like the team which took the first game and had all the momentum.

Northeast cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third with a two-run double by Richardson and a RBI sacrifice fly by Killian Willard.
Marmaton Valley extended its lead to 6-3 in the fifth, as Northeast pitcher Jacob Bryant battled on the mound after taking a hard-hit grounder off his leg. Bryant could have made it out of the fifth but again, two Northeast errors helped out Marmaton Valley. Richardson came on and picked up back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning with the bases loaded.
In the fifth, Marmaton Valley starter Becker tired and Northeast caught him for six runs on five hits. Freshman catcher Austin Baker blooped one in for a hit, then came a Chandler RBI single, McDowell RBI single and Cody Burlingame two-run single.
