For the first time since 2005, the Pittsburg State football team made a return trip to the Division II football playoffs.

The Gorillas drew in as the No. 3-seed in the regional and drew a rematch with MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Omaha at Carnie Smith Stadium.

After a 33-21 win over the Mavericks, the Gorillas faced their longtime nemisis, Northwest Missouri at Maryville.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 31-13 lead in the third quarter before the Gorillas stormed back to take a 35-31 lead late in the game.

But, a touchdown pass from NWMS quarterback Joel Osborn to Kendall Wright ended the Gorillas’ season with a 38-35 loss. Northwest went on to fall 21-14 to Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship.
