Sevio D. Cardiali, 90, of Arma, died at 12:40 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2009 at the Arma Care Center at Arma.
Mr. Cardiali was born October 12, 1918, at Arma the son of Domenico and Erminia Rinaldetti Cardiali. Sevio was a jockey and an aircraft worker. He attended Arma Schools and graduated from Crawford County Community High School in Arma in 1936. Sevio had a colorful career as a jockey and rode in Michigan and California. He rode under contract for Bing Crosby, Harry James and Betty Grable, and Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney. He also rode for C.W. Howard, the owner of Seabiscuit. His riding career ended in 1949 after a serious fall. He was employed by Rocketdyne Company in California and later owned Sevio’s Liquor Store in Arma upon returning to Kansas. He married Betty Simone on June 2, 1946 at Weir, Kansas. Mrs. Cardiali survives at the home. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. Sevio was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, the Lon Helm Post #182 American Legion at Arma, the Arma Eagles and the S.N.P.J. Lodge #225 at Arma. Additional survivors include a daughter, Pamela Sparkes of Arma, a sister, Eleanora Harris of Arma, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Cleland and two brothers, Primo Cardiali and Secondo Pescetelli.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Arma with Father Robert McElwee and Father Donald Thissen as concelebrants. Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma. Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Chapel. The Kansas National Guard Military Funeral Honors from Topeka will conduct graveside services. The family suggests memorials to the St. Ann’s Altar Society. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
