  • It was one of those nights for the Girard Trojan girls Tuesday night against the Galena Bulldogs at Ted R. Taylor Gymnasium.
Senior guard Hadyn Herlocker scored on a layup only 5 seconds into the game, Girard already had a 8-3 lead 1:59 into the game, Girard outrebounded a taller Galena team 25-15, Girard forced Galena into 24 turnovers and Girard made nine 3-point shots en route to a 64-33 win.
“At the Wilson County Classic, finishing up against Fredonia,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “In the second half of that game, we kicked it up a notch, we kicked it up a gear defensively and we made a run in that game. That just kind of dovetailed into what we did tonight.
“Starting out the game, I felt like we were really good on defense and when you’re good on defense and you get some easy transition buckets, everybody’s confidence level goes up and from there, they start packing it in and all of a sudden, that outside shot opens up. It all works together.”
Girard had it especially working in the first half during scoring runs of 9-0, 6-0, 7-0 and 15-0, taking a 43-14 halftime lead behind 24 points from Hadyn Herlocker and six from Hope McLeod, senior guards who also proved relentless pressuring Galena ballhandlers and creating scoring opportunities.
“With our quickness tonight, we were able to get out in transition and get some of those easy baskets,” Coach Herlocker said. “Basically, our defense led to offense tonight.”
Galena presented a challenge inside against undersized Girard posts Ashley Johnson, MaCahla Leslie, Morgan Herlocker and Hannah Jones.
“Tonight was a real tough assignment,” Coach Herlocker said. “At times, they had 6-foot (Abby Shelton) and 6-2 (Lora Rooffener) and in the CNC, there’s not many teams that can put (that kind of height) out there at once. It was a very challenging night for them (Girard posts) but I still thought they didn’t back down defensively and offensively, they went up strong with post moves. I feel like tonight was as complete of an effort that we’ve had all season.”
Nine Girard players reached the scoring column and nine also grabbed at least one rebound.
Hadyn Herlocker led Girard with a career-high 32 points and had five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Hope McLeod added 12 points, combining with Herlocker for 44 points.
Johnson had four points, three rebounds and Leslie had four points, four rebounds.
Abby Shelton led Galena with 11 points and three rebounds. Jordan Roberts added eight points, six on 3-point shots after halftime.
Girard (10-3, 2-0 CNC) hosts Riverton on Friday for Homecoming. The Trojans are 5-1 this season at Ted R. Taylor Gymnasium.

With one second remaining in the contest, Galena sophomore forward J.C. Pugsley scooted in front of a driving Girard player, freshman Drew Davied, righted himself in the lane and took a player control foul on Davied to preserve a 37-36 win. Galena missed free throws, missed layups and seemed on the precipice of letting one slip away under pressure.
Galena junior guard Deven Newman, seasonal leading scorer for the Bulldogs, was hounded by Girard senior Trenton Stolte all night and Newman scored his first and only two points of the game with 24.3 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws. Newman shot 2-5 down the stretch, leaving the door wide open for Girard.
Meanwhile, on the opposite end, J.J. Helton did his own hounding defensive work against Girard leading scorer Devin Alters, who finished with a team-high nine points but was never allowed to find his rhythm all night.
Ray Slimp led Galena with a game-high 15 points, including the first nine of the game for Galena, and had five rebounds. Pugsley added 11 points and six rebounds, plus his most important defensive play late in the game.
Stolte finished with eight points and junior big man Austin O’Dell added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. O’Dell proved crucial in the comeback with five fourth quarter points and he set a screen freeing Alters for a 3 to get the score to 35-34 late in the game.
Girard dropped to 6-7 and 1-1 in the CNC. Galena improved to 10-4.
