Donald Arthur Jonas, Sr. of Moore, Oklahoma, died peacefully after a battle with lung cancer, at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009.

Donald Arthur Jonas, Sr. of Moore, Oklahoma, died peacefully after a battle with lung cancer, at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009. 
His son and daughter-in-law were caring for him in their home in Moore. 
Mr. Jonas was born July 11, 1938 in Holdrege, Nebraska, the oldest son of George and Dorothy (Hanson) Jonas.  He attended College High in Pittsburg Kansas.  He graduated in 1956.
After a few college courses at Pittsburg State U., Don joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany at Herzo Base as a member of the ASA, intercepting communications during the cold war.   He was honorably discharged August 3, 1960.
In September, 1962, he married Jo Eloise “Penni” Pendergast. They had 3 children and were married for 34 years before amicably divorcing in 1996.  He is survived by her. Besides Penni, Don is survived by 3 children, 12 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Don is survived by one sister, Anne and her husband, Dennis Cox of Kansas City, Kansas.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy, his mother Dorothy, and his father George.
Don worked for 32 years for Jack Cooper Transports. In recent years, he enjoyed a position in the shipping department of Reel-O-Matic.  He will be remembered for his high work ethic, and dedication to his jobs. 
Don had a penchant for fishing hats, colored socks, practical jokes, and long stories.  His optimism shone until the very end.  He will be sorely missed.
A memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009 at New Covenant Bible Church, 4230 S. Youngs Blvd. OKC, OK. There will be no viewing.  A private burial in Pittsburg Kansas will happen at a later date.
Arrangements are under the John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, Moore, OK. The family has asked that donations be made to the Russell-Murray hospice in lieu of flowers.
