Beth Jordan, regional representative for the Helen Keller National Center in Shawnee Mission, presented training recently for CLASS LTD staff and clients with vision and hearing loss.
Basic sign language, instruction and tactual sign language techniques and practice, safe guide techniques and simulation activity were all part of increasing awareness for staff and clients.
“I think I would have to say that this was probably one of the best days I’ve had with CLASS,” said Stacy Blevins, CLASS LTD team leader. “It was an amazing afternoon. We got into groups of two and one of us had to be the person who was blind/deaf by using earplugs and wearing glasses that you definitely cannot see through. We were taught how to properly lead a person, how to direct a person to a chair to sit.”
Jordan taught participants tactical signs to numerous words, then they had to use these signs to communicate with a person.
“It was very interesting and was not easy,” Blevins said. “The staff that attended enjoyed it very much and it will be tremendously helpful with clients.”
CLASS LTD is a non-profit organization providing services for persons with developmental and other disabilities in Cherokee, Crawford, Labette and Montgomery Counties in southeast Kansas.
