The Pittsburg High wrestling team split a pair of duals in a triangular on Thursday night at Pittsburg High School.
The Dragons, now 3-2 in duals this season, closed the night with a 45-21 loss to Chanute. After earning points on open weight classes, they opened the night with a 72-9 win over Coffeyville. Coffeyville defeated Chanute 78-3 on the night.
For the Purple Dragons, Beau Bennett (215 pounds) led the way with a pair of wins. He pinned Coffeyville’s Israh Grundy in 17 seconds. He followed that with a 6-0 decision over Damen Hartwig of Chanute.
Pittsburg head coach Scott Rieck said that he’s liked the way Bennett has stepped up.
“He’s been JV for most of the year,” he said. “We’re trying to look for people to wrestle and to win matches. For the most part, Bennett’s the only one that’s been showing up and doing that consistently.”
Cougar VonFeldt (171) pinned Coffeyville’s Curtis Bolton in the second round.  Against Chanute, Mario Corado (119) defeated Tim Wrestler 7-4 and Jordan Brown (152) defeated Justin Lawrence 6-0.
Beyond that however, the Dragons struggled on the mat.
“We lacked the effort that we needed to compete with Chanute,” Rieck said. “It was a rather shameful loss to be honest.”
Next the Purple Dragons go to the SEK tournament in Chanute on Saturday.
Rieck said that from here, the team is simply looking for its top 14 wrestlers.
“This is a sport where when you’re at there all by yourself, you find out what you have, what kind of mettle that you’re made of,” he said. “Right now it looks like that metal is aluminum.”

Columbus wins
The Columbus wrestling team improved their dual record to 6-0 on the season with a 41-33 win over Seneca (Mo.) on Thursday night.
Zach Conway (119 pounds) won by technical fall over Trevor Sill, 17-1. Nick Thomas (130) won by decision over Nathan Fortner. CJ Napier (140) pinned Josh Mullin in 3:57. B.T. O’Hare (145) won a 3-0 decision over Dillon Webb. Damion Pinnin (152) pinned Sheldon Alexander in 1:50. Tank Burns (285) pinned Derrick  Hopper in 2:50. The Titans move on to the SEK league matches in Coffeyville on Thursday.
