  • Annual Riverton High School Alumni held their annual banquet June 8 in the Gerald E. Barkley Field House.
    C.W. Wilson, president, presented a yellow rose to Mrs. Estella (VanHorn) Stanton, Baxter Springs. She graduated 75 years ago with the class of 1938.
    The alumni awarded a scholarship to Sarah Jones, a 2013 Riverton High School graduate. She plans on attending Pittsburg State University in the fall.
    It was announced that Keaton McCallister, class of 1932, left the alumni a monetary gift. He was a very active alumnus, and served as chairman for the two luncheons held each year for more than 25 years. He died in August, 2012.
    Clyde Bond, Riverton, class of 1941, was  honored as Outstanding Alumni of the Year. Attending were his wife, Ester Bond, and their four children. They are Mike Bond, class of 1965, Texarkana, Texas; Allan Bond, class of 1967, Goodman, Mo.; Roxie Ward, class of 1968, Diamond, Mo.; and Linda Stark, class of 1970, Riverton. Also present was granddaughter Shelly Haddock West, Riverton, class of 1990.
    Newly elected alumni officers are: Sharon (Lee) Shackelford, class of 1956, president; Mary (Read) Pierson, class of 1962, vice president; Sharon Jarvis Tucker, class of 1970, secretary; and Evelyn (Newcomb) Garner, class of 1962, treasurer.
    Outgoing officers are: C.W. Wilson, class of 1955, president; Ray Williams, class of 1948, vice president; Sharon (Lee) Shackelford, class of 1956, secretary; and Betty (Ryon) Williams, class of 1952, treasurer.
    Door prizes were won by Resa (Martin) Venturella, Chicago, Ill., Tara (Venturella) Kinsley, Columbia, Mo., Virgie (Smith) Tedlock , Frisco, Texas, and Suzan (Laughlin) Young, Derby.
    The event was catered by Lumpy’s of Joplin.
