  • Pittsburg Post 64 split a double header against the Arkansas Yard Dawgs to finish up the Pittsburg Legion/FSCC Classic at JayCee Ballpark.
Post 64 couldn't come up with the big hit in the first game while the Yard Dawgs could, sending Pittsburg to a 4-1 loss.
"It's the same scenario. We get runners in scoring position, and then we're not getting it done," Pittsburg Post 64 head coach Mike Watt said. "If we want to beat good teams, we have to come through. We're not coming through in the clutch."
The pitching in the first game was stellar throughout, but nothing like Saturday's combined one-hit game through five innings. Post 64's Blake Vail and Arkansas' Clayton Welchell induced out after out.
Vail had five 1-2-3 innings, including the fourth, when he got the assistance of a double play by Luke Marquardt at shortstop. Vail ended with four strikeouts and one walk, giving up five hits and the four runs.
Arkansas' Welchell gave up more hits than he did walks (four to three), but struck out seven to earn the victory.
"Blake had his best outing of the summer. He's struggled a little bit, but it was great to see him come out and give a great performance," Watt said. "Their guy had great velocity. He changed speeds. He's a quality arm. Give him credit, he pitched well. We've got to come through when we have an opportunity to do it."
Brennan Craig started the scoring for Arkansas with a two-run home run over the right field wall for the Yard Dawgs.
Post 64 would manufacture a run of their own in the top of the third with Bryan Wade getting on base with a well-placed infield single and beating the ball to first base. Wade would steal a base and move to third on a sacrifice before scoring on Christian Cedeño's single.
The Yard Dawgs would get a little breathing room in the sixth inning, using a walk and a Luke Marquardt error to get two men on for Brett Denney, who hit an RBI double to the right gap for one run before Adam Ness followed that up with an RBI single. Post 64 would prevent the two remaining baserunners from scoring by getting three quick outs to end the inning.
Post 64 left 8 on base during the game, leaving two on during the second, fifth and sixth innings. That included five runners in scoring position.
The seventh started off promising for Post 64. Down 4-1 in the seventh, V.J. Piccini earned a walk after fouling off five pitches in a 10-pitch at-bat. But the hit never came to score Piccini and the game ended with a loss.

Pittsburg Post 64 did not want to leave its home showcase without a win, and got that win in its final opportunity on Sunday. But it wasn't easy to get there.
The Yard Dawgs would jump on Nicholas George at the start, with Adam Ness hitting a two-run double before scoring himself on a sacrifice for an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Post 64 would respond with a run each in the bottom half of the first and second innings. Ryan Cedeño hit an RBI double in the first to score Colton Gilbert (who had reached on a 10-pitch walk). In the second, Nathan George hit a double down the left field line to score Blake Vail.
Arkansas would add a run in the third on consecutive singles by Brett Denney and Ness for a 4-2 lead, but Post 64 would get a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth for the lead. Five hits wrapped around a walk for Post 64 generated four runs, chasing two pitchers from the game and giving Pittsburg its first lead of the tournament.
It was a lead they wouldn’t give up. In the bottom of the fifth, Post 64 would score a run on Blake Vail’s double to center field. Two more runs would score in the sixth for Post 64, who would end with their first win of the tournament.
Post 64’s Nicholas George allowed the five runs on just four hits, walking two and striking out two.
