The Pittsburg girls’ tennis team traveled to central Kansas over the weekend and competed in the Salina Central Invitational, coming away with an 11th-place finish in a field of 16 teams.

Individually, the Purple Dragons had a pair of top-15 finishes as the No. 2 doubles team of Alexa Yantis and Sam Bollinger finished in 10th place with a 3-2 record, while PHS’ No. 1 doubles team made up of Abi Felter and Ashlee Beitzinger took 15th place with a 2-3 record.

Bollinger and Yantis started out their day with an 8-4 win to Newton before falling to McPhearson by the score of 8-5.

They followed up with two straight wins, 8-6 over Maize South and 8-7(2) over Maize.

Their day ended with an 8-1 loss to Salina Central.

PHS’ No. 1 doubles team started out with an 8-6 win over Hutchinson. Felter and Beitzinger fell in three straight matches to Valley Center, Maize and Maize South. Their day ended on positive note with a shutout win over Goddard, 8-0.

Also placing for the Purple Dragons was No. 2 singles player Nicole Konopelko, who finished in 27th place after a 2-3 day.

Konopelko took two losses early to Maize’s Madison Loudermilk, 8-3, and Valley Center’s Elle Kabler, 8-2.

She earned her first victory of the day with an 8-0 win over Topeka West’s Julie Roberts.

Konopelko lost to Hutchinson’s Syndee Foster, 8-5, before her ending her day with an 8-4 win over Ashleigh Schmidt of Newton.

At No. 1 singles, PHS’ Chania Stewart went 0-3 on the day and did not place. She fell to Salina Central’s Abbi Schroeder, 8-3, Goddard’s Shannon Gary, 8-2 and Hutchinson’s Foster, 8-7(5).


PHS tennis is in action at 3 p.m. this Thursday when they are on the road to do battle with Chanute.
