PITTSBURG — Morning Sun Managing Editor Patrick Richardson Tuesday announced the addition of Mike Elswick to the newsroom staff.
Elswick is a veteran of more than 30 years in the industry.
He has worked for newspapers in Oklahoma, Wyoming and most recently in Texas. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. Elswick is the spouse of Morning Sun Advertising Director Stephanie Elswick.
He is an Air Force veteran who attended Pittsburg State University before transferring to OU to pursue his journalism degree.
While attending Pitt State he worked for about three years at Chicken Mary's restaurant.
"We're very pleased to have a veteran reporter of Mike's caliber join the staff," Richardson said. "His experience and insights will serve both The Morning Sun and the Pittsburg community well. We're lucky to have him."
Elswick spent more than 20 years in the East Texas area working for the Longview-News-Journal and Marshall News Messenger, which shared common ownership. He spent the past two years as editor of the weekly Terrell Tribune in Terrell, Texas.
"I have a passion for community journalism and am looking forward to working with The Morning Sun staff in covering the news and people of Southeast Kansas," he said. "I have fond memories of my time of living in Pittsburg and Arma and am glad to be back in the area."
Elswick will primarily be assigned to cover Crawford County and the communities surrounding Pittsburg.
