PITTSBURG — A local man was killed in a car accident 2.25 miles south of Pittsburg at approximately 8:10 p.m. Wednesday.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Darryl Skaggs, 59, of Pittsburg, was travelling south on South 220th Road when his vehicle left the road and entered the ditch on the east side.
The 1993 Ford pickup continued travelling in the ditch for another 360 feet before striking a junction box. It then continued another 77 feet where it struck a tree and caught fire.
Crawford County Fire District No. 1 Baker Township extinguished the flames. The accident is currently under investigation by KHP. Cause of death and why the vehicle left the roadway are still unknown. Skaggs was taken to Frontier Forensics in Kansas City for autopsy.
