GIRARD — The Crawford County Commission discussed insurance and other costs at its regular meeting Friday.
The commission reviewed insurance, workmen’s compensation and other costs related to insurance for the past five years. The discussion led to ideas for additional safety initiatives — along with steps already taken by the county.
The commission discussed having refresher courses on safe driving and CPR training this fall.
Along with insurance, the commission announced it will have a conference call with IMA Consulting — the county’s new insurance consulting firm — next week, and IMA will attend a meeting in the next two weeks.
Commissioner Jeff Murphy said he spoke with Crawford County EMS Ambulance Director Randy Sandberg, who had concerns about funding for ambulances. Murphy said he talked with Pittsburg Assistant City Manager Jay Byers, and Byers is willing to discuss the ambulance service.
Murphy said since the ambulances serve Pittsburg, it may be possible to use some of Pittsburg’s public safety sales tax money to help fund the ambulance service. Commissioners Tom Moody and Carl Wood said it can’t hurt to have a discussion.
Wood said Mission Construction’s crew is still forming the deck on the Centennial Avenue bridge. The commission said rain has delayed Mission some, but does not plan to give any additional days on the completion date set by the contract.
BJ Harris will speak to the commission next week about current contracts the county has for events and other tourism-related business. Harris has taken a job with eXplore Lawrence and will finish his job at Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau at the end of this month.
Murphy reported that he planned to purchase a 72-inch root grapple bucket for his road crew’s skid steer. It will be used to move brush and cost $1,959. The other commissioners agreed it was a good purchase.
The county will host two worksessions August 15. The first will take place at 9 a.m. and focus on the county sewer districts, while the second will be at 9:30 a.m. with Zak Dickey o discuss insurance work for the county’s non-health insurance.
The commission will host workshops for the budgets of all four county fire district budgets, and the county’s overall budget, at 10 a.m. August 22.
