GIRARD — The Girard Youth Activities Association raised $40,947 to be used for new playground equipment at the baseball and softball complex in Girard.

Their donation toward the playground was accepted at the Girard USD 248 board meeting on Thursday.

USD 248 Superintendent Blaze Bauer said the property on which the Girard Youth Activities Association wishes to have the playground built is owned by the school district.

The board approved a new playground at October’s meeting.

In other business, the maintenance director updated the school on his department’s expenditures. Bauer said in the year the director has worked there he has brought detail to the maintenance department.

The board is also up for it’s new five-year district strategic plan. Bauer said on Nov. 3 the board has spoken to community leaders, student groups, administrators, and classified and teaching staff — those who have stake within the school district — to assist in a new strategy plan. Monday evening a community session took place to gather community input.

The board approved the retirement of Drivers’ Education Instructor Gene Hendrickson who has taught the class since around the late 1980s.
