PITTSBURG — For Julie Reams, being part of United Way of Southwest Missouri & Southeast Kansas is a perfect fit.

Reams, United Way director of resource development for southeast Kansas, was recently honored as one of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Women of Distinction.

Reams said she was overwhelmed and surprised when she found out she had been selected as one of the Women of Distinction.
“It is so humbling and rewarding,” she said. “You don’t think anyone is watching or paying attention … there is just no words.”

She said her job allows her to do what she is passionate about, helping others.
“I’m very lucky and fortunate to be a part of an organization that can do that,” Reams said.

In the short time she has been at United Way — she joined in 2016 — she has increased the awareness of the organization's work and in 2017 she founded a United Way chapter at Pittsburg State University.

Beyond her professional work, she is an active volunteer for the Lord’s Diner, Pittsburg Noon Rotary Club, Pittsburg Area Young Professionals, Crawford County Republican Women, PEO Chapter CJ, Business Education Alliance and as an Ambassador and Youth Leadership facilitator for the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

“When I live in a community, I want to be part of that community,” Reams said.

Reams said she volunteers for causes she strongly believes in.

“I like to be out there and doing something I love,” she said. “I can’t think of a doing anything else, it’s such a big thing in my life.”

Volunteerism reaches Reams home where she encourages her family to stand up and volunteer, the motto in her house is “Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
