PITTSBURG — With his slogan, “Rollin’ with Nolan,” Nolan Turnbull was elected as principal of Lakeside Elementary School for a day on Friday.
Turnbull, a fifth grader from Haley Bugni’s class, campaigned against fifth graders Olivia Grimmett and Gabe Kimzey.
He was elected during the school carnival in the fall.
As school principal, Turnbull took care of many responsibilities, such as taking a shipment of learning tools to every teacher in the school and looking at new playground equipment.
As part of his promise during his campaigns, he gave each student an extra recess and gave no homework to students. The teachers on the other hand, were given math homework, which he then had to grade.
“It’s super fun,” Turnbull said. “I got to go to each class and see what they were doing.”
He said his peers shouted in excitement when they learned the teachers were getting math homework.
Turnbull said he learned there are a lot of things which the principal takes care of behind the scenes at the school.
Turnbull passed out Tootsie Rolls to each student in the school, which was part of his campaign slogan “Rollin’ with Nolan.”
During lunch, Turnbull hosted “Pizza with the Principal” with students who were doing well in school.
“It was a special lunch,” he said. “They chose kids that stood out and are well behaved in school.
“It was kind of like a treat for them.”
To give his campaign opponents an opportunity to participate in principal for the day, he let them each smash a pie in his face.
He thanked his student ambassadors for their help throughout the campaign and Friday.
The school day ended with a dance party.
