PITTSBURG — A new face has joined the Morning Sun staff.
Current Sports Editor Jordan Buckamneer is moving on at the end of the month and Dashaun Vereen will be taking over the reins of the Sun sports desk.
Born in rural North Carolina, Vereen grew up with a passion for everything sports. After choosing a local early college high school that did not offer sports, it became clear that playing was not in the cards, so he turned his attention to covering them.
After graduating high school, Vereen was a sports writer for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke student newspaper, The Pine Needle for two years, where he covered the three major sports.
At the start of his junior year he transferred to copy editor, where he honed his skills in AP style and grammar.
Senior year brought a new opportunity; managing editor. During his time as managing editor Vereens’ responsibilities included building pages, distributing stories to the writers, enforcing deadlines, and writing stories.
After graduation, where he received a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a concentration in journalism, Vereen was then hired as sports writer for his local newspaper; The Tabor-Loris Tribune. While at the Tribune, Vereen covered high school sports at three nearby high schools.
“We’re excited to have him here,” Morning Sun Managing Editor Patrick Richardson said. “Jordan has done a superb job with our sports desk for the last year and I’m confident Dashaun can take it to the next level.
