PITTSBURG — Pittsburg has a new postmaster and he’s glad to be back.
Robert Vacca got his start in the post office business in October 1993 at Pittsburg’s post office.
“I always wanted to come back and be postmaster here some day,” he said.
Vacca started out as a temporary employee, then before he knew it he was promoted to career employee then superviser. He first became a postmaster in 2000 in Baxter Springs.
“It all just progressed from here,” he said.
Although Vacca hasn’t been too far over the years — in Baxter Springs and Fort Scott — he said he is glad to finally be of service to the Pittsburg area where he has resided for the majority of his life. He said going to work in Pittsburg is like moving into a new town because he spent so much time away.
“Baxter springs was great and Fort Scott was super but I’m glad to be closer to home,” he said.
He just wrapped up his first full month at the post office and will soon complete his oath as a postmaster in the near future.
Vacca said words from the previous postmaster, Robert Beasley, during an installation ceremony remains in his mind, “Pittsburg has good people, good schools and anything they don’t have you don’t need,” Vacca said. “That kinda always stayed with me.”
Vacca said he looks forward to meeting with people in the community and seeing familiar faces as they come into the post office.
