PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg Boys’ Baseball team relied on a shut out from their pitching staff and timely hits from the offense on their way to a 6-0 win against Labette County on Tuesday.
Starting pitcher Alex Kafka only allowed a lone Labette hit, striking out four in five innings. Trenton Austin entered the game in relief, striking out five batters in two innings pitched.
Tye Cicero put Pittsburg on the board in the first inning, bringing home Jhalani Long on a ground ball single to left field.
The Purple Dragons extended their lead in the fourth frame, led by Austin’s two-run RBI single.
Dalton Gromer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning, giving Pittsburg a 4-0 lead. Jerek Butcher’s two-run RBI single in the sixth added in two insurance runs.
In softball action the Purple Dragons earned a split in their doubleheader against Labette County. Pittsburg earned an early lead in game one, leading them to the 7-2 opening game win, before faltering in extra innings in the nightcap 9-5.

Madden Petty pitched a complete game from the circle, striking out seven.
After allowing Labette County to get out to a 2-0 lead after one frame, the Purple Dragons responded with three runs of their own in the second inning.
Addy Campbell’s sacrifice fly in the second brought home Kaydn Matlock, leading to Sophia Pinamonti driving in Shannon O’Hara on a groundout.
Pittsburg grabbed the 3-2 lead on a Mallory McThompson RBI single.
Petty shut out Labette the rest of the way. Pittsburg added in one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth, courtesy of Sydney Linahan’s three-run RBI double.
McThompson, Linahan, and Myla Turner chipped in two hits each for Pittsburg. Petty had one hit to go with two walks and one run scored.
Zoe Pinamonti had one hit and one run scored.
Game two Labette County, 9 Pittsburg, 5
Labette bounced back after a lackluster game one performance, topping the Purple Dragons in nine innings.
Labette County took a 3-1 lead after three innings, but Petty tied the game up in the seventh with a two-run RBI double. Pittsburg had the opportunity to win the game with Petty on second with two outs, but were unable to get the game clinching hit.
After both teams had a three-and-out eighth, Pittsburg allowed six Labette County runs in the ninth. The Purple Dragons responded with two runs in their half of the inning.
Petty, Campbell and Isabella Pinamonti led Pittsburg in hits, with two each. Zoe Pinamonti was responsible for the run scored in the third inning.
Petty pitched nine innings.
Labette County had four batters with an RBI. Keeley Daniels and Katelyn Helwig had two hits each.
